
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Safe in Damp Spots
If you’re putting a 1500W infrared heater in a bathroom or a rainy gazebo, a “waterproof” label isn’t enough. You’ve got high power and moisture mixing in one spot. That’s a recipe for a ground fault if you aren’t careful. Here is the reality: steam is sneaky. In a bathroom, it finds its way into standard housings. Once that moisture hits the electrical terminals, it creates a bridge between the live wire and the metal frame. Not great. To stop that from happening, we stick with double-insulated wiring and sealed ceramic holders. We look for IP ratings that actually keep droplets and vapor away from the contact points. Then there’s the wiring. We use reinforced silicone cabling. Why? Because standard PVC cracks when it goes through the heat cycles of a 1500W lamp. Silicone can take the heat without melting or shorting out. But the real lifesaver is the GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). You have to wire the unit into one. By grounding the chassis directly to the mains, you’re adding a safety net. If a seal fails and a wire touches the frame, the breaker trips instantly. It’s a split-second save that matters. There is a bit of a balancing act here, though. If you seal the unit completely airtight, you protect the electronics, but you trap the heat. That “heat soak” can actually cook the wire insulation from the inside out. You need just enough ventilation to let the unit breathe without letting the water in. One last thing: look at your mounting brackets. Go with stainless steel or treated aluminum. Cheap steel rusts in a humid bathroom, and once that happens, your mechanical ground is gone. Don’t cut corners on the hardware. It’s just not worth the risk.
