
Don’t Burn Your Ceiling: A Guide to Infrared Heater Spacing
We’ve all seen those high-end changing rooms or luxury lounges where you step in and instantly feel that deep, cozy warmth. To get that “five-star” feeling in seconds, you usually need shortwave or medium-wave infrared. It’s powerful stuff. But here’s the catch: you can’t just bolt these things to a ceiling and hope for the best. You need to leave some breathing room.
Why the Gap Matters
Here is the thing about infrared. It doesn’t just warm up the air like a standard space heater. It sends out energy in straight lines. When that energy hits something, it turns into heat. If you mount a heater too close to your ceiling—especially if you’re dealing with drywall, wood, or PVC—you’re basically creating a heat trap. The ceiling starts soaking up all that upward energy. Before you know it, you’ve got discoloration, warping, or, if you’re really unlucky, a fire. I usually suggest a gap of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. If you’re pushing a beast of a unit (2000W or more), give it even more space. You don’t want your ceiling turning into a giant radiator.
Heat, Air, and “Hot Spots”
You want the heat hitting your guests, not your rafters. When you’re planning the layout, keep an eye on the beam angle. Most of these lamps have a specific spread. If you tilt the lamp, that “hot spot” moves. It’s a small adjustment, but it makes a huge difference in how the room feels. Then there’s the air. Heat rises. If the gap between the heater and the ceiling is too tight, you’ll end up with a pocket of superheated air trapped up there. This often trips the thermal cut-off switches. The unit will just keep cycling on and off, which wastes power and beats up the relays. Not ideal.
Making it Work in Tight Spaces
What if your ceilings are low? You’ve got a couple of options. You can swap in lower-wattage lamps, or use specialized reflectors that force the heat strictly downward. You might lose a bit of coverage area, but it keeps the building inspectors happy. Just do yourself a favor: check the melting point of your ceiling material before you flip the switch. It’s a lot easier to move a heater now than to fix a melted ceiling later.
