
Making Bathroom Heaters That Don’t Blind You
When we build infrared lamps for the bathroom, we’re doing more than just chasing away the chill. We’re actually playing a bit of a balancing act with light. See, standard short-wave lamps are basically light cannons. They blast out high-intensity light that can really stress your eyes. It’s even worse for babies, since their eyes aren’t fully equipped to filter that kind of glare. Not a great feeling when you’re just trying to keep a kid warm after a bath. So, we change how the light behaves. Keeping your eyes safe We use special quartz coatings and specific filaments to push the energy away from the visible light and deeper into the long-wave infrared range. What does that actually mean for you? It means the “glare” disappears. You get all the warmth without that harsh, blinding blue or UV light that makes you squint. We’re basically shifting the energy from something you see to something you feel. Dealing with the steam Bathrooms are pretty brutal places for electronics. Between the humidity and the splashes, things can go south quickly. That’s why we wrap everything in waterproof, IP-rated housings. We don’t want steam getting anywhere near the electrical contacts. We also use polished aluminum or gold-plated reflectors. These act like a mirror for heat, bouncing it straight down where you need it and keeping the actual housing from getting too hot to touch. The trade-off Now, there is a catch. Since we’re using long-wave infrared to keep things safe and soft, it doesn’t bite into the skin as sharply as those industrial drying lamps you see in factories. The “warm-up” feels a bit slower. To fix that, we just make the emitter surface larger. It spreads the heat out better. Just a heads-up: make sure your wiring can handle the wattage needed for this kind of setup. And please, for the love of everything, wire it to a dedicated GFCI circuit. Water and electricity are a bad mix, and it’s just not worth the risk.
