Making Your Patio Warm (And Smart)
If you’ve ever tried to heat a patio with a standard space heater, you know the struggle. You’re basically trying to heat the entire outdoors, and the second a breeze kicks in, all that warmth just blows away. That’s why I always suggest going with infrared. Instead of fighting the wind to warm up the air, infrared goes straight for the target. It heats your skin and your furniture directly. It feels like sitting in the sun on a crisp October morning. Just make sure you get units with a proper IP waterproof rating. You don’t want a little rain turning your cozy evening into a blown fuse. Instant warmth is a beautiful thing. The best part? There’s no waiting around for the unit to “warm up.” The second you flip the switch, you feel the heat. But flipping switches is a chore. If you use a smart home hub—something using Zigbee or Matter—you can automate the whole thing. I love setting up a “Guest Mode.” A few taps on my phone five minutes before people arrive, and the patio is already toasted and ready for them. A quick warning on the tech side. Here is where people usually mess up: you can’t just plug a high-powered heater into a cheap smart switch. You’ll fry the board instantly. You need a heavy-duty relay or a smart contactor to act as the middleman. The smart hub handles the “brain” work (the logic), while the relay handles the heavy lifting of the electricity. Once that’s set up, you can even add a temperature sensor. If the air dips below 15°C, the heaters just kick in on their own. You don’t even have to think about it. A couple of things to keep in mind. These things pull a lot of power. If you’re installing a bunch of them across a big deck, check your breakers. You’ll probably need dedicated circuits so you aren’t plunging your kitchen into darkness every time you want to stay warm outside. And one last tip: infrared is all about the line of sight. It can’t punch through glass or heavy plastic. If there’s something blocking the path between the heater and your chair, you won’t feel a thing. Position them carefully, and you’re golden.
