
Why we put our bathroom heaters through “damp-heat” torture
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, wild temperature swings, and water vapor basically attacking everything in the room. If an infrared heater isn’t built specifically for this, it’s going to die. Period. Usually, the quartz tube or the electrical connections give out way before they’re supposed to. The problem with moisture Here’s the thing about water vapor—it doesn’t just sit on the outside. It finds a way in. It sneaks through the seals where the wires enter the quartz tube. The second that moisture touches the tungsten filament or the halogen gas, the lamp is toast. To stop that from happening, we use damp-heat aging tests. We basically throw these units into a chamber with 95% humidity and cycle the temperature up and down. It’s a brutal process, but it lets us simulate years of steamy showers in just a few weeks. We do this to find exactly where the seals might leak before a customer ever sees the product. Keeping the heat moving Then there’s the mirrors. For these heaters to actually feel warm, the reflectors have to stay crystal clear. But humidity loves to cause “clouding” or oxidation on the mirror surface. When that happens, the heat doesn’t project—it just gets trapped. We age the units to make sure our coatings don’t peel or fade when they’re hit with constant steam. The tricky part: The Balancing Act You’d think the solution is just to seal everything airtight. But it’s not that simple. Quartz and metal expand at different speeds when they get hot. If we make the seal too tight to block every single molecule of water, the glass can actually crack the moment you flick the switch. It’s a delicate balance. We have to get the seal compression just right so the lamp doesn’t pop, but the internals stay bone-dry. We don’t like guessing when it comes to how long a product lasts. We run the tests, watch for failures, and tweak the seal chemistry until the lamps can actually handle a real bathroom. If a company isn’t testing for damp-heat, they’re basically just waiting for the first customer to call and complain.
