
Keeping Infrared Heaters Safe in Steamy Bathrooms
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam everywhere, and water and electricity are a nightmare pairing. When moisture settles on a live heating element, it creates a bridge that lets current leak right into the chassis. Not great. To stop that from happening, we focus on two things: the materials we use to block the electricity and how we seal the edges.
The Right Stuff for the Job
We don’t just use standard quartz tubes here. Instead, we go with high-grade dielectric coatings. Think of it as a protective skin that keeps the conductive filament away from the damp air. Even when the surface is dripping wet, these materials keep the electricity where it belongs. The real danger zone? The seal where the glass meets the metal. That’s where most heaters give up. We use a fusion process to make that seal completely airtight. If even a tiny bit of moisture creeps inside the lamp, you’re going to trip the RCD or cause a short. We make sure that doesn’t happen.
Wiring and Grounding
Standard connectors just aren’t built for a steam room. They’ll fail. That’s why we use IP65-rated enclosures for every single junction. And here’s a pro tip: you have to use compression glands on the cable entries. If you don’t, moisture can actually “wick” its way along the cable and pull water straight into the terminal block. We also make sure the outer reflector and the housing are grounded. By bonding everything to a common ground, any stray current gets diverted safely into the earth. It means when you touch the unit, you feel nothing. Zero voltage.
The Trade-off
Now, there is a catch. To get this level of safety, we have to use thicker coatings or specialized housings. Because of that, a little bit of the infrared heat gets blocked. You’ll probably see a 5-10% drop in heat density compared to a cheap, uncoated tube. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind, but you’ll want to bump up your wattage slightly to make sure the room still feels cozy.
