
Keeping Your Infrared Towel Rails Dry (and Safe)
Bathrooms are basically steam rooms. Between the hot showers and the splashes, it’s a nightmare environment for electronics. If you just put a standard infrared lamp in there, it’ll probably short out or rust through in no time. We spent a lot of time figuring out how to stop that from happening.
Dealing with the Steam
Here’s the thing: moisture loves to sneak into electrical terminals. Once it’s in, you’ve got a problem. To fix this, we use IP-rated enclosures and anti-fogging seals. We basically lock the water out. By using high-temperature silicone and gaskets at the junction points, we stop condensation from jumping between live parts. It keeps the heating element from burning out and saves you from a total equipment failure.
Splashes and Rust
Imagine splashing cold water onto a scorching hot infrared tube. That “thermal shock” can actually shatter the glass. To stop that, we use toughened quartz glass and a few specialized coatings. Then there’s the chassis. We powder-coat or anodize the metal so it doesn’t turn into a rusty mess after a few months. And a little pro tip: we use a “drip-loop” for the wiring. It’s a simple bend in the cable that forces water to drip off onto the floor instead of running straight into the internal circuitry. It’s a small detail, but it’s a lifesaver.
The Trade-off
Now, there is a catch. When you seal something this tightly to keep water out, it’s harder for the unit to “breathe.” Because there’s less airflow, we rely on the thermal mass of the rail or some built-in heat-sink fins to move the heat away from the electronics. Just a heads-up: if you cram one of these into a tiny, airtight alcove with zero ventilation, the internal thermal switch might trip a bit more often. It’s just the unit protecting itself from overheating. We build these things to take a beating, but please—don’t skip the grounding. Make sure your earth connection is rock solid. Long-term humidity can be tricky, and a secure ground is the only way to stay safe.
