
Dealing with Voltage Headaches in Infrared Heating
If you’re building a glass bottle cutter or any kind of industrial heating rig, you’ll probably hit a wall pretty quickly: the power supply. Most of the infrared lamps you find off the shelf are built for 110V or 220V. That works fine for a small shop. But the moment you ship a machine to a plant in North America, Europe, or Asia, you’re suddenly staring down 480V or 575V industrial grids. It’s a mess if you aren’t prepared.
It’s more than just a transformer
Here’s the thing: you can’t just slap a transformer on the end and call it a day. That’s a recipe for disaster. To actually handle 480V or 575V, the lamp itself has to be built for it. We’re talking about the internal tungsten filament and the quartz envelope. If you try to wire a 110V lamp into a high-voltage industrial line, it’ll blow out instantly. Pop. Gone. We fix this by tweaking the length and diameter of the filament. This way, the lamp hits the heat you need without melting the terminals.
The “Fit” Problem
Getting the voltage right is only half the battle. You also have to worry about the hardware. Whether you’re using R7s or Sk15 connectors, the fit has to be tight. Really tight. At 575V, a loose connection isn’t just a nuisance—it creates arc points. That leads to melted sockets, smoke, and a lot of expensive downtime. To save you the headache, we use global standard adapters. It means you can swap out lamps without having to tear apart and rebuild your entire heating chamber.
The Trade-off
High-voltage lamps are beasts. They give you intense heat density, which is exactly what you want when you need fast cycle times for glass cutting. But there’s a catch. The higher the voltage, the more “twitchy” the system gets with power surges. You’ve got to make sure your circuit breakers and contactors can actually handle that initial inrush of current. And keep an eye on your cooling. If your fans can’t keep up with the heat a 480V array puts out, you might actually warp the frame of your machine.
