
How to pick the right infrared lamp for your bathroom
When you’re looking at infrared lamps for the ceiling, it’s tempting to just grab the one with the biggest number on the box. But that’s usually a mistake. You don’t want to torch your electricity bill—or worse, end up with a bathroom that’s freezing in the corners and scorching right where you’re standing.
Getting the size right
It all comes down to how much space you’re actually trying to warm up. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), keep it simple. A single 250W to 400W lamp is plenty. If you go overboard in a small space, you’ll get that annoying “hot spot” effect. You know the feeling—you’re roasting under the lamp, but the second you step away, you’re shivering again. For those mid-sized bathrooms (between 4m² and 8m²), I’d suggest going with two 600W lamps. It spreads the warmth around much better. And if you’ve got a big, luxury setup over 8m²? You’re going to need a few more lamps. Just make sure you map out where they go so the heat zones overlap. Nobody likes a cold patch in the middle of the room.
The trick with infrared heat
Here is the thing about shortwave infrared: it doesn’t really “heat the air” the way a standard radiator does. Instead, it hits your skin and the floor directly. It’s a more immediate, cozy kind of warmth that doesn’t just float up to the ceiling and disappear. But you do have to watch your ceiling height. If your ceilings are super high and you use a low-wattage lamp, the heat might lose its punch before it even reaches you. For standard 400W-600W tubes, try to keep them under 2.5 meters. If your ceiling is higher than that, you’ll need to bump up the wattage just to feel that same level of warmth on your toes.
A quick warning on power
Higher wattage is great because it’s fast. Like, instant fast. An 800W lamp hits its peak temperature almost the second you flip the switch. But wait—check your circuit breaker first. Wiring up four high-power lamps on one residential circuit is a gamble. During a cold winter snap, you might just trip the breaker and end up in the dark. It’s worth double-checking your amperage limits before you commit to a bunch of high-power bulbs. Better safe than sitting in a cold, dark bathroom.
